1994 American League
MATHEWSON AWARD
for Pitching Excellence
There was a strike this year, wiping out the final third of the season,
as well as the postseason. The strike interrupted some great years by some
veteran pitchers, including David Cone, who won the Cy Young Award.

Both Cone and Jimmy Key pitched for Toronto in the 1992 World Series,
then signed as free agents with other teams. It was a great move for
Key, who had two big seasons with the Yankees. He encountered arm problems
in 1995, but returned to pitch brilliantly for New York in the 1996 World
Series. Cone made a short stop in Kansas City and won a Cy Young Award, then
made his way to New York where he also pitched brilliantly in 1996, and also
1998 and 1999.
The top four vote-getters were Cone, Key,
Randy Johnson, and Mike Mussina. That sounds good to me. Johnson was
already an outstanding pitcher, but was still making huge improvements
on the mound. He was quickly improving his control from "awful" to "pin-point",
without losing anything off his great fastball or curve. Mussina was just
25 years old, and had a career record of 52-21.
Ho-hum, what else to say about this year?
Roger Clemens had a great season, but no one noticed because Boston was
bad, and anything less than a Cy Young Award is usually a considered a
disappointment from the Rocket. Steve Ontiveros was healthy for one season,
and won the ERA title. Dennis Martinez was 39 years old, and moved to the
AL for the first time in a decade. He was brilliant for the Indians, whom
he would lead into the playoffs a year later.
