1920 National League
MATHEWSON AWARD
for Pitching Excellence
While tumultuous changes were going on in the American League,
it was business as usual in the NL. The Brooklyn Dodgers won the
pennant, then lost the World Series to Cleveland. Pete Alexander
reasserted himself as the best pitcher in the league. Big things
were happening in baseball; Babe Ruth hit 54 home runs this year,
and the spitball was banned. But it would be a few years before the
NL underwent serious changes.

Back from the war, and with a new team (the Cubs), it had
taken Pete Alexander a year to get back to his top form. As you can
see, his top form was quite a bit better than any other pitcher in
the league. Pete was 33 this year, and had his last really
spectacular season. The game was changing, and he was battling
epilepsy and alcoholism. He never came
close to throwing 363 innings again, and only once more had an ERA
under 3.00, though he remained a highly effective pitcher for the
rest of the decade.
Brooklyn pitcher Burleigh Grimes was the next best pitcher
in the league. This was the first of five 20+ win seasons he had in
the 1920's. The man had great timing; although the spitball was
banned, pitchers who already threw the pitch regularly were
allowed to continue doing so. Grimes fit this description, and
threw the spitter for another 15 years, winning 270 games in the
process.
I think Wilbur Cooper and Babe Adams were the next best
pitchers in the NL. Both pitchers toiled for a Pittsburgh team that
had a horrible offense. Thanks to their pitching, the Pirates
managed to have a winning record despite their inept hitters.
Cooper was in mid-career; this was his first of three consecutive
20+ win seasons. Babe Adams was 38 years old, and was enjoying a career
resurrection.
Hippo Vaughn had his last outstanding season. Hippo was 32
years old, and seemed well on his way to the Hall Of Fame. But next
year he was awful, and his career ended. I assume he hurt his arm,
though I don't know this for a fact.
