1925 National League
MATHEWSON AWARD
for Pitching Excellence
The Pittsburgh Pirates won the pennant this year, ending a string of
four in a row by the Giants. The Pirates then faced the Washington Senators
in the World Series; they fell behind three games to one, then won the final
three games to win the Series. The Pirates' primary strength was their offense,
though they also had some fine pitchers; the Cincinnati Reds had a great
pitching staff, but were sunk by some terrible hitters.

Cincinnati's aces were Eppa Rixey, Pete Donohue, and Dolf Luque. Cuban-born
Luque may have been the best pitcher in the league, but he got little support
from his team, and had a losing record. Rixey and Donohue were both outstanding
pitchers who had great years; I would give the edge to Rixey. This was Eppa's
last big year; he hung for another seven years, then retired with 266 career
wins. Warren Spahn and Steve Carlton are the only left-handers who have won
more games in the National League.
In the league MVP vote, Dazzy Vance led all
pitchers in votes. Vance followed his great 1924 season with another impressive
performance; though I don't think he was the best pitcher in the league, he
was certainly the most impressive power pitcher. Pittsburgh's best pitchers
were Ray Kremer and Lee Meadows. Meadows career was nearing its end, but
he was finishing on a positive note. After some ugly losing seasons early
in his career, Meadows' luck turned around with the Pirates. He retired
with a winning record, 188 wins and 180 losses. Meadows was nicknamed "Specs",
the name given to all players who wore glasses back then.
